One of my authors has found some photos he’d like to use in a book that were donated by the Bundesarchiv (German Federal Archives) to Wikimedia. What I can’t tell is whether or not one needs to seek express permission to use the photos. Does anyone know just how the CC copyright works?

You do need permission from the Bundesarchiv if you are going to publish the photos in any form. We went through this before with a cover at Del Rey.
I’ve contacted Bundesarchiv directly and am awaiting a response. I’m guessing the cover in question for Del Rey had to be a Turtledove 🙂

Check out this link: http://creativecommons.org/about/licenses/ I think that will tell you all you need to know. I’ve got photos on Flickr licensed under a CC (non-commercial) license and I certainly don’t expect people to ask me before using them. Indeed, I used a CC license so people would feel free to use them if they wanted – preferably without feeling the need to ask me, not that they’re great photos! There are different CC licenses, however, and your author’s position vis-a-vis the pictures very much depends on which CC license has been used.
PS I’m very much enjoying The Light of Burning Shadows at the moment. Great stuff!

Thanks for the link. I certainly hope that turns out to be the case, but I’ve also found caveats and it’s just not crystal clear under what precise conditions the archive donated the photos to Wikimedia.
What kind of photos do you take?
